Description
Welcome!
We know it can feel a bit daunting to turn up to a group for the first time, so here’s a quick guide to what you can expect from a Singing Mamas Community Group.
Who we are
Singing Mamas is a grassroots, global non-profit movement that began right here in Forest Row. We focus on singing for wellbeing.
Our groups are open to women of all ages and life stages. We especially welcome women who are pregnant or have children under 3, as well as their allies—like mums of older kids, aunts, grandmas, sisters, and friends. Allies play an important role in supporting new parents and helping build a strong, caring community.
Why we Sing
There’s growing evidence showing how powerful singing is for both physical and mental health.
Singing can:
- Lower stress levels
- Improve mood
- Help you feel more connected and supported
- Strengthen the bond between mama and baby
What we do
We sing simple, uplifting songs to lift our spirits and connect with one another. There’s no need to be “musical” and no expectation to sound a certain way.
- We sit or stand in a circle, with a mat in the middle for babies and toddlers.
- Songs are taught by ear -the facilitator sings a line, and everyone echoes it back. No sheet music, no jargon.
- It’s all about the joy of singing together. No auditions, no solos, no judgement.
We focus on how singing feels, not how it sounds. If you feel emotional or teary during the session, that’s completely normal and welcome. Just stay in the circle and let it pass or take a moment away —no questions asked.
After singing for an hour, we stay for half an hour to relax, chat, drink tea, and eat cake (including gluten-free and vegan options). You’re welcome to help yourself throughout the session too.
You can have a peek inside a Singing Mamas group and listen to mums talk about their experience in the short video here.
